Join us for a walk to the incredible Lud's Church - Mysterious Peak District Gorge
Lud's Church is a 100-meter-long, moss-covered gritstone chasm located in the Staffordshire Peak District's Back Forest. Known for its deep, 18-meter-high walls, this mystical, chilly, and often wet gorge is steeped in folklore, linked to Lollard worship in the 1400s, and associated with legends of Robin Hood.
Key Details for Visiting
Location: Near the Roaches and Gradbach in the Staffordshire Peak District.
Access: A short, popular walk from the Gradbach car park; it can be very muddy.
Features: A narrow, deep chasm filled with ferns, trees, and mosses.
Highlights: Contains the "Devil's Pulpit," a natural platform.
Mythology: Associated with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
Best Time to Visit: The sun only shines directly into the chasm on Midsummer's Day.
Parking: The nearby car park fills up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays.
Gear: Sturdy, waterproof footwear is essential as the area is constantly damp.
Duration: The hike is relatively short and often combined with a walk to The Roaches.
